I've been building and using numpy Universally on a PPC mac for a good 
long time now, so I suspect that wasn't t he issue after all. Or maybe 
it is an issue with the latest numpy, but I don't think GDAL needs the 
latest numpy.

numpy should build Universal and run on PPC and Intel -- if it doesn't, 
then that's a question for the numpy list.

More when I get back to my Mac.
