 Marius, let me know how you follow with Fedora 9, there i can help you 
ut any time. Unfortunately not an ubuntu fan so cannot help you :(, i am
out of knowledge how ubuntu folk manage versions and packages.

gdal is in very good shape on Fedora stuff (glad to maintain it in person) i 
use heavily it on large datas and python/perl bindings works smooth too,
no problem at all.
