[gdal-dev] Phase image overlay

Hi list,
I have two (8 bit) geo-tiff files containing the amplitude and phase of
a complex dataset.  Amplitude is grayscale and phase has a "jet"
color-table associated.

I would like to produce a single file with the phase transparently
overlayed on the magnitude.

Which is the best way to do it? 

Is it possible to do this using GDAL command line tools?
