I'm not sure yet. trunk gdalbuildvrt has a new feature (-separate option) and 
the change for null values being mixed into that new code doesn't make easy 
to backport just it. I also consider it more as a new feature than a true 
bugfix. As it is changing the output of gdalbuildvrt, this could be seen as a 
unexpected effect for existing users of gdalbuildvrt (unlikely, but who 
knows ?). Not to mention that it will give people a good reason for upgrading 
to 1.7 when it will be released ;-)

If you really need it, you can just copy gdalbuildvrt.cpp from trunk to 1.6 
branch. It should compile just fine I think.

I might change my mind if enough people wish to see it backported and nobody 
complains.
