Did you try _not_ doing that, and using EPD's numpy instead -- maybe 
William is right, and GDAL doesn't care.

Option 3:

Ask Enthought to include GDAL in EPD. Not a bad idea, there is lot's of 
geo-spatial stuff to be done in the scientific programing world, though 
it won't happen tomorrow, and if you're not a paying customer, you might 
not have much leverage!
