[gdal-dev] Large NITF generation

I'm seeing an issue with generating large NITFs 1GB+.
1. I've tried using "GDAL1.7dev" in Linux and "GDAL 1.7.2" in Windows.
2. The images are all 8-bit 3band.
3. I've tried going from
     TIF --> NITF
     Tiled-tif --> NITF
     NITF --> NITF

4. In terms of validating the input data, I've loaded them in ERDAS-IMAGINE
10, ArcMap 9.3.1.
5. I then repeat the validation steps on the output nitf and get errors.
6. There is no error in the generation process.
7. The metadata in the output nitf looks good. Only the pixels are "bad".

QUESTION:
1. Is there a known limitation of NITF output?
2. Would setting environment variables such as GDAL_CACHEMAX help?
