William,

The correct formlation appears to be:

  <FID>Fieldname</FID>

There are a few examples in:

  autotest/ogr/data/vrt_test.vrt

Given that you already seem to have tried this I don't know why it
isn't working.  If you can construct a simple case and file a ticket
it could perhaps be investigated.
