make sure your LD_LIBRARY_PATH and PATH point to your custom
directories BEFORE system directories.

like export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

Also removing system package should help, but it's not necessary if
your setup if correct.
