This sounds reasonable for Nevada.

Both are be up to date.  

You can simplify your command line to:  
ogr2ogr -s_srs epsg:4326 -t_srs epsg:5070 Nevada_Albers.shp Nevada-WGS84.shp  

I don't get error messages with a point shapefile built from your extent  
coordinates.
