Hum, could you "fix" / "repair" / "save as" the shapefile with ArcGIS, whatever 
it offers so it can generate a shapefile on which it doesn't protest anymore ? 
That way we could compare the difference between shapefiles. The 100 first bytes 
of .shp and .shx must be the key.
