[gdal-dev] Build OGR with ESRI SDE

Hi,
i have this same issue but  "in order to deploy ArcSDE technology as an
enterprise geodatabase you must have, or be prepared to purchase, an ArcGIS
Server license"

is this a must? 

Since that geotools has  " ArcSDE plugin allows the GeoTools developer to
work with the ArcSDE middle ware"

wounder if it is possible to use this plugin to build a OGR SDE Driver?

Any suggestion or opinion about this issue would be great.
