Depends on use cases. If you need to process the whole file and that it can 
fit in RAM, then direct http[s:]// without /vsicurl might be slightly faster.

OK, I've just pushed a change to emit a warning in such situation

$ python swig/python/scripts/gdal_edit.py -stats byte_cog.tif
Warning 1: The IFD has been rewritten at the end of the file, which breaks COG 
layout.
