Dear Colleagues,

as Suchith has mentioned, there is a pre-AAG workshop on
"Open GIS: New Opportunities for Research and Education" on Monday (7th April)
in Tampa, FL, that Sergio Rey (Arizona State University, see OSGeo REL #42)
and Daniel Sui (Ohio State University, not a member yet?) are organising.

This is a great opportunity to assess where we are and update our wiki table
with the latest status information - we have just reached 74 network laboratories.
As with other conferences, our website and wiki may get increased traffic so
please update your information, especially if you have been working on your website
or are still listed as "being established".
Also, as you might have noticed, we have started to add links to open source geospatial software
and data projects that the network members lead or participate in (see the Notes column)
to facilitate quick access to expertise so please update that column as well.

Thank you, Helena

The primary goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers from academia, industry, and government agencies to discuss the new opportunities and set the agenda for Open GIS research and education in light of new advances during the past five years. An edited volume is planned based upon the talks given at this workshop.

The pace of change has been much beyond our expectations and i thank all universities who have established Open Source Geospatial Labs and our colleagues in "Geo for All" initiative.

What is the point of teaching GIS to students (in both developed and developing countries) and taking away the tools from them after the course and telling them that now you need to buy these expensive proprietary software licences if you want to continue using them after their course (which is what the proprietary GIS vendors would like !)
