[Ica-osgeo-labs] Urban Science - City analytics - thematic labs

Chris,

If we can identify our common interests, prioritize them and begin solving them together, how big a dent would that put into city management productivity!
Every city must assuredly address similar issues.

I'm imagining a platform, a virtual globe app that works with QGIS-PostGIS-GRASS-MapServer (and each of these already does to some degree) where functionalities could be 'dropped in,' further optimized and further shared. If roughly architected, this might define an open challenge to university GIS and computer science departments to show their stuff in building those functionalities, even just one.

This outcome from this kind of competition would continually improve the quality of life for municipalities. And the notoriety of the solution providers, the university students and their professors, would be sweet music and resume magic!

>From the cities, we'll need a laundry list of well-defined use-cases that address a city's needs. Then we can challenge those nascent software engineers (and post doc gray beards) to solve accordingly.

I will work with you and Patrick to create a new maillists etc for this
to get this started (geoforall-urbanscience at lists.osgeo.org ) and we
can also use the RDA meetings in San Francisco to expand ideas/synergies.

Best wishes,

Hi All,

I am keen to know which other labs might be interested and have a focus
in the area of urban science / city analytics and might be interested
in establishing such a thematic?

Cheers

I suggest you take the lead to establish Spanish thematic and setup

geoforall-spanish at lists.osgeo.org ) but feedback the important ideas
back to all of us also to build synergies.

Also any others who wish to setup other thematic networks, please take

Hi. I would like to bring-again-attention to something related to
this thread and is my concern with translation efforts (in both ways)
that are needed to achieve a true efficient global lab network. I also
suggested some time ago (related to this also) the need to build
thematic networks within the Geo4all initiative, for example regional
networks that share a language and/or similar economic, cultural or
social characteristics. In my opinion this can strengthen the
initiative by widening the possibility of joining the ICA-OSGeo-ISPRS
lab network. It will be easier and more effective for instance if
Spanish speaking members discuss these and other topics between each
other and give their point of view. If any in the list agrees with
this please let me know.

Thanks,

Thank you Suchit.

Therefore, the template would be:

+ Title in English
+ Language
+ Original title.
+ ECTS credits/Hours
+ Number of editions
+ Kind: Virtual, face-to-face, blended Target (professionals,
+ technical students, children, teenager, embedded in a wider program, etc.)

Thanks Antoni. This is a good template for sending nominations to
Charlie. Only thing i will add is also info if the teaching materials
are available in Open Licences (Creative Commons) for others to
use/reuse as needed .If there is url/weblinks it will help a lot to
get some overview of the course irrespective of the language/regions.

Hi Antoni,

Thank you for these two good points. We greatly welcome nominations
for educators who have created GIS courses from different languages
and regions in developing and developed world. The nominator can send
the summary details in English along with the nomination which will
help the committee members to understand its impact. For example, you
will have more ideas on the various Spanish GIS courses and its impact
. So please nominate them with their details.

All ideas/inputs welcome.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Dear all,

I am sorry if I say something that you probably have taken into account.

I find the award a very good initiative, but how can the
different languages of several courses be taken into account?
I know many GIS courses in Spain, but most of them are in Spanish.

On the other hand, I think that the basis have to be very well
established and considering the social environment to which the course
belongs and its target. It is not the same a course in a country with
low GIS penetration, than in a country where GIS is a common tool in
several companies and administration.

Well, these are only two items I was thinking about.

Best regards,

Suchith,

Thanks! Go FOSS4G 2015 Como!!!
http://europe.foss4g.org/2015/
OSGEO is a lightning rod for OS leading the world by example!

And if any of you OSGEO leaders are not eligible, which doesn't seem
fair, but oh well. . .
i.e., http://wiki.osgeo.osuosl.org/wiki/Ica-osgeo-isprs_award

Please get your 'stuff' to a GIS teacher who is! Or a super TA!
Let's begin the constructive collaborating now!!!
Maybe even post your stuff, and advertise so others can plagiarize,
the highest form of flattery!

Hi Patrick,

Great points and i couldn't agree more...

Thank you for this kind offer. I will ensure that if no one match
funds your offer, i will do that.

I really hope OSGeo Board will take positive decision on the Student
Awards proposal that we submitted on behalf of Geo for All. We will be
happy to provide any further info needed. Once this is done and OSGeo
Treasurer agrees to be in charge of the Student Award accounts, we can
easily get many organisations to contribute.

Time is the essence. For example, we were able to take quick action to
support this Open Education week because of the funding we had within
the 5k USD from OSGeo budget for ICA-OSGeo lab activities. Investing
in education for the future generations is the best investment we make
and i am sure OSGeo Board will strongly support our Education investment.

Best wishes,
Suchith

Dear Open GeoSpace, Open Minds and Open Source Folks,

A challenge. . .
Please note, this FOSS4G crystal bull is a ^matching grant^ that is
challenging others to donate as well, at whatever level. So, this one
comes forward as long as another ?200 comes in from others, whether
alone or combined. Alternatively, if it is recommended to receive cash
instead of a trophy, I am glad to do that instead. A ?20
here-and-there adds up.
Let?s recognize the best with a boost!

Please help us find organizations to donate!!! We want Charlie Schweik
to have a real kitty to work with. Maria Brovelli needs help too! She
is trying to make generous accommodations for students and others at
the best FOSS4G yet! The website is a gorgeous start! Como should be
very proud to host such an auspicious event!

A thought. . .
There is no more important profession on the planet than welcoming our
children to this world we find ourselves in, and that welcome should
be with the best education possible. Rewarding those who do this well,
especially when they share their ?how-to? talents with the rest of us,
is an honor we must strongly commit to.

A concern. . .
These are especially challenging times of a rapidly warming world that
will continue to impact our ability to survive, as does the increasing
concentration of wealth that wants to accelerate consumption and
greatly limit democratic choices for a more sustainable future.

Hi Patrick,

Many thanks for this kind contribution to the "Open Education Award"
we will give to honour and thank the greatest contributions to Open
Education principles in the Geo domain. I will speak with Maria and
should be able to arrange free conference registration for the winner
to attend FOSS4G-Europe. As Jeff will be there at FOSS4G-E , he as the
OSGeo President can directly give the award to the winner.

maybe to help cover their travel expenses, I am willing to ?match?
that with one NASA crystal bull

(~200 Euros out of my own pocket)

Hi Patrick,

This is great idea that will help to further make impact in Openness
in GeoEducation .

Out of the 5k USD we have got allocated for ICA-OSGeo labs from OSGeo
budget we have earmarked 3500 USD for website development requirements
( to be finalized with more inputs from all and OSGeo Board) and 1000
USD for NASA WW Challenge student winner teams, so we still have 500
USD to plan some activity to further our aims.

So i suggest that we plan an award for the Course leader/Lecturer of
the best Geospatial course ( online or class based) based on Open
Principles . That will be a great way to honour and recognise the
educators who made it possible and will be an inspiration to others to
build upon for future years. We will use the same Award Committee
that we set up for the ICA-OSGeo-ISPRS student awards to decide the
best course based on nominations received to Charlie Schweik (chair of
the Award Committee) cschweik at pubpol.umass.edu before 28th Feb 2015.
Please note that all members of the Award Committee

http://wiki.osgeo.osuosl.org/wiki/Ica-osgeo-isprs_award will not be
eligible even if they are running excellent programs - sorry folks :)

The Award will be announce on 9th March (start of Open Education Week)
and given at FOSS4G Europe conference in Como. We will send a formal
call on this Course leader Award soon.

We have some courses run by many universities in our list itself, so
feel free to nominate those courses and we now have opportunity to
recognise both the students and educators.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Suchith,

How about an award for the best GIS course! Teachers need GIS love too!

1. This can be the complete syllabus for the class, as open source!
This would allow other teachers to benefit and improve the course
(still open source). The next year's award might go to who has
improved that course the most! This is the beauty of open source, we
continually rise to collectively-stand on each other's shoulders. And
^all^ of our students are the beneficiaries.

2. And maybe another category for best ^online^ GIS course (open
source of course).

3. And maybe an award for the best student-produced GIS app (open
source). To make this a more reasonable exercise for the 'judges,'
each GIS teacher would be able to submit just one of their
student-team's projects, or maybe one for each class taught. That
would help improve and narrow the field of candidates.
