Colleagues,

We need 4 more volunteers to come forward (2 for chairing the Europe thematic ), 1 for Asia and 1 for Africa regions. Having one more cochair for region thematic will help Helena, Charlie and Anne. I had been the contact for Europe and Africa till now, but i think it is better now that others can lead this. Hence we need new regional thematic chairs for Europe and Africa.

Please let us know your interest for leading these region thematics , so we can finalise this and update in our website etc. Many thanks.

Suchith

Respected Sir/Madam
I am Rania Elsayed Ibrahim, Researcher, and have PhD in Computers & Information. I teach GIS and Remote sensing courses using ArcGIS, ENVI. I am now working with ESRI ArcGIS, and QGIS. I received email from Prof. Dr. Franz-Joseph Behr concerning open source programs and he suggested me to join this group. I register my interest/use of QGIS in educational settings. I am now involved in a project for building spatial data infrastructure based on open source programs in Egypt, I am responsible for training people on open source programs such as QGIS, Postgis, etc.
I am looking to create a project for education development using open source programs. currently I am looking to create a suite of GIS training courses using QGIS, postgis, etc. I am also looking to get postdoc opportunity to improve my knowledge and relationships in this setting.

Colleagues,

As have build consensus on the need to create separate thematic areas to accommodate different topics , language and regions, we will now go ahead and to setup mail lists to start the process.

It is good if we can identify the needed thematics as well as the leaders for each area, as it is time wise easy to do this in one go rather than doing this separately

For example

For Urban Science - City Analytics Thematic
Theme Leaders - Chris Pettit (Australia) and Patrick Hogan (USA) and will also be the administrators for the mail list we will create
geoforall-urbanscience at lists.osgeo.org<mailto:geoforall-urbanscience at lists.osgeo.org><mailto:geoforall-urbanscience at lists.osgeo.org<mailto:geoforall-urbanscience at lists.osgeo.org>>

Teacher Training & School Education thematic,
Theme Leaders - Elżbieta Wołoszyńska-Wiśniewska (Poland) and Adrian Manning (UK)
the mail list will be geoforall-teachertraining at lists.osgeo.org<mailto:geoforall-teachertraining at lists.osgeo.org><mailto:geoforall-teachertraining at lists.osgeo.org<mailto:geoforall-teachertraining at lists.osgeo.org>>

Spanish thematic
Theme Leaders - Sergio Acosta y Lara (Uruguay) and Antoni Pérez Navarro (Spain)
the mail list will be geoforall-spanish at lists.osgeo.org<mailto:geoforall-spanish at lists.osgeo.org><mailto:geoforall-spanish at lists.osgeo.org<mailto:geoforall-spanish at lists.osgeo.org>>

We could also setup region wise thematics that again links with region wise activities like FOSS4G-NA, FOSS4G-Europe, FOSS4G-Asia and hopefully we will establish FOSS4G-Africa and FOSS4G- SA soon. So we need two people to lead each of these region thematic. This is important as we are growing, as Sergio rightly pointed out we need to accommodate local needs and continent wise thematics are good as it is big to build collaboration but more local to suit the needs.

Europe Thematic
Theme Leaders -Please come forward
the mail list will be geoforall-europe at lists.osgeo.org<mailto:geoforall-europe at lists.osgeo.org><mailto:geoforall-europe at lists.osgeo.org<mailto:geoforall-europe at lists.osgeo.org>>

North America Thematic
Theme Leaders -Please come forward
the mail list will be geoforall-northamerica at lists.osgeo.org<mailto:geoforall-northamerica at lists.osgeo.org><mailto:geoforall-northamerica at lists.osgeo.org<mailto:geoforall-northamerica at lists.osgeo.org>>

South America Thematic
Theme Leaders -Please come forward
the mail list will be geoforall-southamerica at lists.osgeo.org<mailto:geoforall-southamerica at lists.osgeo.org><mailto:geoforall-southamerica at lists.osgeo.org<mailto:geoforall-southamerica at lists.osgeo.org>>

Africa Thematic
Theme Leaders -Please come forward
the mail list will be geoforall-africa at lists.osgeo.org<mailto:geoforall-africa at lists.osgeo.org><mailto:geoforall-africa at lists.osgeo.org<mailto:geoforall-africa at lists.osgeo.org>>

Asia Thematic (including Australia)
Theme Leaders -Please come forward
the mail list will be geoforall-asiaaustralia at lists.osgeo.org<mailto:geoforall-asiaaustralia at lists.osgeo.org><mailto:geoforall-asiaaustralia at lists.osgeo.org<mailto:geoforall-asiaaustralia at lists.osgeo.org>>

As we have grown rapidly my suggestion is that once we have the region wise thematic group leads established, the leaders of that become the contact points for any new labs to be established to contact and the mailing list becomes the first point of contact for the new members and all regional members in the region can use the list for collaborating on regional funding calls, FOSS4G local conferences etc. All ideas welcome.

Timing wise, this is good as the Advisory Board is working to finalise the criteria for new and existing labs and this way we can make sure it is scaleable and meets local/region requirements/needs.

So could i request those of you interested to lead the Region wise thematics to inform me by 25th Feb at the latest and we can finalise this. Also if you wish to setup any other thematic (specific area) please inform all of us now, so we can finalise this. Many thanks.

Suchith
