This is really excellent. These thousands of students are our "Train the Trainer". They now got the skills and the software. This is true empowerment.

With all our Geo for All colleagues also now making use of your educational materials, we will be reaching and empowering hundreds of thousands of students through our network effects soon.

Thank you for your great contributions.

Best wishes,

Suchith

The GeoAcademy has three time periods:

1. Summer 2014 we offer free access and got a total of 3000+ enrolled in the 5 classes
2. Fall 2014-Summer 2015 we taught as credited courses to three cohorts of about 25 students, so 75
3. Fall 2014-currently we have offered as MOOC and ongoing self-enrollment open-ended courses totaling about 6000

Hi Phil - may i ask in total (roughly) how many students have enrolled for your MOOC till now?

Also the exponential multiplier effect of having both software and educational materials available is remarkable as other educators worldwide are using your resources. You should highlight this for your program and that differentiates this with other proprietary GIS vendor MOOC programs!

Phil, nice work! Charlie, nice call! And words by Diana S. Sinton worth repeating. . .

Some MOOCs don’t just fade away, they transform. One former MOOC, Del Mar College’s Introduction to Geospatial Technology using QGIS<https://www.canvas.net/browse/delmarcollege/courses/introduction-to-geospatial-technology-1>, is now a series of five self-paced classes<http://fossgeo.org/free-qgis-courses/>. These are offered by GeoAcademy<http://fossgeo.org/about-geoacademy/>, an “independent consortium of GIS educators dedicated to promoting the use of open source software for geospatial technology education.” Lead instructor Phil Davis says that there are currently about 500 students who have enrolled in the courses. This isn’t a massive number, but this reflects the trend towards open online courses with self-paced content, like the Discover Spatial<http://discoverspatial.com/> collection.

GeoAcademy course of special note: QGIS Courses<http://fossgeo.org/free-qgis-courses/>

Colleagues,

See a story on GIS MOOCs and some references to the GeoAcademy work. Way to go Phil and team!
