Suchith,

Thanks for kicking off this thread.

Philip,

I think your characterization is exactly right, an that is the kind of role GeoBadges is looking to play. The GeoAcademy issuing GeoBadges along with its certificates of completion would be a great way to let people show their achievements outside of formal educational degrees. GeoBadges was built as the home for micro-credentialing of all sorts of project based learning and service. If you moved forward on this, GeoAcademy would join the OSM, MapStory, OGC, Crisis Mappers, GeoMaker and GeoPlunge communities…and the Girl Scouts of America (go figure!) community. And the AGS is in discussion with many others. Some of the badges recognize project based learning. Others are for service thru geography. The GeoAcademy case highlights the opportunity to provide a series of GeoBadges that recognize learning, outside of formal accredited degree or certificated educational institutions. In the end, the GeoBadges team at AGS sees all such accomplishments being digitally credentialed, and linked to user’s LinkedIn accounts.

So, if you are willing to join in, I think it would be great to get a series of QGIS GeoBadges granted by GeoAcademy.

Also, I am happy to be corrected by anyone and everyone on the list if my assumptions are somehow askew.

Thanks!

Chris

Glad to help. ICYMI we've been issuing "certificates of completion" in the free online course for years. We currently have 1642 students enrolled in the free GST 101 course. By completing modules they can "earn" certificates for each module and overall class (see attached). Couple items to note:

1. Current certificates do not carry any academic credit nor are the industry recognized
2. GeoBadges would be similar. The "GeoAcademy" is not a legal educational organization, neither are we accredited.
3. Badging is, at best, a personal motivator and symbol of one's support for a field of study or technology. They are not to be confused in any form with industry certification nor are they academic awards.
4. The official OSGeo QGIS project, managed by Tim Sutton, is no way endorses the GeoAcademy nor our certificates.

The process of issuing authenticated certificates requires intensive professional effort that can only occur in the presence of fiscal transaction where professionals are paid for their services to review student projects, etc. There is currently no such system, although Arnulf Chrisl and others have tried and discussed for years. As long as everyone agrees GeoBadges issued by GeoAcademy and/or AGS are merely medals of honor and carry no professional nor academic credence, we can work a system for issuing them. Anything beyond that will require serious commitment from OSGeo and Geo4All.

Colleagues,

To keep you updated, we have postponed the telemeeting with AGS (planned last week) to discuss ideas on Geo4All GeoBadges as am waiting to get availability of both Nikos and Ela to arrange the telemeeting with Ana and Jon about Geo4All GeoBadges. We hope to arrange a telemeeting this month itself. I have already informed Ana the best available times so waiting for doodle poll from her to find best time suitable for all . Anyone interested to participate in this telemeeting are very welcome.

For QGIS Badges, the idea is good and I think GeoAcademy is best people to do this because of thier track record of running a very successful MOOC program using QGIS .I am requesting Phillip Davis ‎to please take initiative on this . Once GeoAcademy starts doing this, it will inspire others to also join efforts. I request everyone to send thier ideas/inputs on how we can make this possible.

Phil - are you able to do this and arrange a meeting with Ana to follow up ideas?

Best wishes,

Suchith
