We have a new job opening for a Research Assistant(RA)/Developer in the Extreme Citizen Science (ExCiteS) group, in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at University College London.

We are looking for an experienced and talented programmer with interest in open source geographic web technologies and geospatial data and data quality. The RA/Developer will be part of the ExCiteS group and the new H2020 research project ‘WeGovNow!’ for which you can find extensive information here<https://uclexcites.wordpress.com/2016/02/03/new-project-wegovnow-citizen-engagement-in-local-government/>

The primary role of the RA/Developer will be to extend our existing GeoKey data repository and API (which is built around PostgreSQL/PostGIS, python and Django) to enable it to plug into software including social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter) and other platforms required by the project. A secondary aspect of the role is to assist with research into measuring the quality of spatial data and communicating this to non-experts.

Key Requirements

You will need to have a degree in a related IT discipline and experience working as a database and back-end web developer, ideally within standards-based projects and using open-source technologies. You will have knowledge of up-to-date, open-source, spatial and non-spatially enabled technologies will also need to have a solid foundation in structures and standards, properly utilising code management systems (GitHub), designing robust code in an easily extensible way. You should be able to communicate technically complex information in an understandable way. In addition, the project will also explore ways to make spatial data usable for non-experts, particularly at local government level, so you will have some experience with current approaches to spatial data quality: measurement, metrics and documentation.

The post is available for immediate start and is for 12 months in the first instance.

Closing Date: 22nd of May 2016
