[Geo4All] Ideas/inputs needed for committee guidelines for GeoForAll

You are right Sergio. Last year there was lot of discussion on the need for having budget esp. for GeoForAll website updating with new features etc.

Our website is kindly developed and hosted by colleagues at the University of Southampton (special thanks to Jason Sadler). They are doing it fully free for the community and i am very grateful to them. I really hoped we could atleast provide some support for adding new functionality etc . It is not right to overload them with new requests for more features etc .

Unfortunately when we submitted our request to OSGeo Board list, some individuals who were not even contributing to GeoForAll , told that this is not best use of budget! If they have atleast stepped up and said that they can volunteer few hours for the website, then it is fine. But just opposing without stepping in and volunteering efforts is not best way in a do-ocracy like OSGeo.

Our Southampton colleagues continue to help us with the website updates and hosting. I hope when OSGeo has a new website, we will have resources to expand and add new functionalities to our website.

Best wishes,

Suchith

I remember discussing about the need to have budget especially for GeoForAll website's maintenance. What I don't remember now is what decision was finally adopted.

Dear colleagues,

It will be really helpful to get your ideas on this. Also we need to as a committee inform OSGeo Board on our budget requirements for 2017.

I suggest that we request for budget for OSGeo Student Awards at FOSS4G events (5000 USD). We could use this to request other organisations to match fund this to maximise impact.

Yesterday, I saw the mail from Maxi in UN list [1]on the UN OpenGIS initiative[2] . Maria Brovelli has been contributing our efforts for this excellent initiative esp in training. I want to thank Maria for taking lead on this. This is a really strategic initiative that will benefit FOSS use in UN . Hence it has global benefit and strategic. We would do our best to get UN to help fund the travel costs for Maria's participation but if needed there should be budget to cover her participation for this. So this cost also need to be included in the budget.

I am requesting your inputs before forwarding the request to the board by Dec 20th

Best wishes,

Suchith

Subject: [geoforall-ab] Ideas/inputs needed for committee guidelines for GeoForAll

Dear colleagues,

The OSGeo Board has started an excellent initiative to have every Committee to define their guidelines and made them available to the Board. Once the Board has revised and accepted the guidelines, it will be made available to everybody .

You can find a helpful guide here (thanks Jody)

https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Committee_Guidelines#Examples

OSGeo Board have decided to give the different Committees the liberty of proposing their guidelines instead of imposing just one guideline to all of them. I think this is excellent idea as every committee has different needs and requirements.

GeoForAll has grown rapidly and our structures have evolved over time. In addition to our mailling lists where all the discussions take place, we now have our Advisory Board, Regional Chairs , Thematic chairs to guide us but as we keep growing rapidly we need more ideas for keeping pace with the developments. I request all of you to help us by giving your ideas for this.

Also any budget needs for GeoForAll please let us know. My request to the OSGeo Board is for having a budget set for annual student awards for FOSS4G events (as we did before).

So please start sharing your ideas/inputs for this.

Best wishes,

Suchith
