[Geo4All] AAG synergies and collaboration- telemeeting followup

Hi Suchith, yes we are planning to pick a venue outside of the conference hotels. There is a vibrant GIS community in DC and humanitarian mapping community that we work with and I’m certain some of them would want to attend but not attend the conference (and pay conference fees just to go to the mapathon). Venue has not yet been set but we aim to make it as accessible as possible, and on the evening of the panel. Looking at the anticipated schedule, I think we should choose Wednesday as the day – there is less conflict on the official agenda and that is the typical day that the GeoDC group meets already.
Thoughts?
Patricia

Hi Andy,

Thank you. That is excellent.

You are right, we have till Nov 8th to finalize ideas for this. We just need on more cochair willing to help organise this panel session to inform us if possible by 22nd Monday so we can start work on this.

I understand YouthMappers are planning the mapathon outside the main AAG conference venue (Patricia - did I understand this correctly ?) . If so, we have bit more time to finalise the panelists etc.

Best wishes,

Suchith

Looks like I’ll be going to AAG, and I’m willing to co-chair.

October 22 is a Monday, by the way. Looks like we have until November 8 to pull this together in its entirety:

Dear all,

Please find below the draft of the proposed panel session at AAG 2019. We need two volunteers who are planning to attend AAG and interested in co-organising this session to please let me know by 22nd October.

Details below

=================================

AAG 2019 PANEL

Enabling the Right to Benefit from Geospatial Scientific Progress for everyone

At the 2019 AAG Conference, YouthMappers will be organising a mapathan and the GeoForAll community aims to support this excellent initiative by bringing together a panel session looking into ideas for enabling the Right to Benefit from Geospatial Scientific Progress for everyone through Open Principles in Geospatial Education.

Geographic Information Science is an important contributor to the advancement of human knowledge, as well to solving so many societal challenges.Through there has been huge advances in Geographic Information Science over the the last few decades, the benefits of Geospatial education and entrepreneurship opportunities are very limited for economically poor students and communities. GIS was an expensive technology and hence many economically poor students and communities did not have access to this over many decades. The last decade has seen a rapid growth in open source geospatial software and open data developments which has now made geospatial software and education opportunities available to all. Open principles in education (open educational resources, free and open software, open data, open standards , open access to research publications) are a big enabler for making geoeducation opportunities accessible to all .

How do we enable geoeducation opportunities for all? How can Open Principles in Geospatial Education help enable everyone to enjoy the benefits of scientific progress and its applications? How can we create a global community of thinkers committed to enabling geoeducation opportunities for all?

At AAG 2019, we aim to bring together key thinkers to discuss ideas for this.

If you are interested in co-chairing this session, please email to Suchith.Anand at nottingham.ac.uk<mailto:Suchith.Anand at nottingham.ac.uk> by Wednesday October 22nd

Thank you to Patricia, Marcella, Tom, Phillip who were able to join our telemeeting. . I hope I correctly summarised the main points from the discussions below . Please correct/edit/modify as needed.

  1. We discussed ideas for supporting YouthMappers hackathon at AAG 2019. Patricia, Marcella are involved in organising this. We can support them by helping organise a panel session (just before the hackathon) bring key panelists.

Action - Suchith to prepare a draft abstract for the proposed panel session and send it to GeoForAll list with request that any two volunteers who are planning to be at AAG 2019 act as co-chairs for the session. We can then submit this by Oct 24th?

2. We discussed the importance of having strong presence for OSGeo at AAG 2019. Once idea was to have OSGeo Live USBs handed out to all AAG participants, students etc . This will be a great way to reach out to the participants as well as serve a great value to the participants.

There will costs but doable if we are able to find an organisation to sponsor the OSGeo Live USBs ? Guido- it will be great to have your ideas for this. The sponsor can put their logo in the USB? All ideas welcome.

Patricia - please add any other points I missed? Thanks.

Best wishes,

Suchith
