Subject: Black Futures Doctoral Scholarship Scheme

Dear All,

We ask that you please share this wonderful opportunity as widely as possible, via networks and on social media channels. Please encourage potential students to apply. An electronic poster is also attached.

The Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences (FELS) is accepting applications for their prestigious Black Futures doctoral scholarship scheme. This competitive scholarship will fund talented UK-domiciled Black and mixed Black heritage students who want to pursue postgraduate research at Southampton. This year there are five scholarships on offer, to begin a PhD study in October 2023.

The deadline for applications is March 17th 2023.

The purpose of these scholarships is to attract excellent Black and mixed Black heritage students wanting to study for a postgraduate research degree in any of our five Schools.
• Biological Sciences
• Geography & Environmental Science
• Health Sciences
• Ocean and Earth Science
• Psychology

Why apply

• Scholarships are made for the full duration of your course (3.5 years).
• Each scholarship will cover your full course fees and provide you a stipend for living costs in line with the UKRI rate (£18,022 per year in 2023/24, with the value increasing every year to align with the UKRI rate which is adjusted for inflation).
• Each studentship comes with an annual £1000 research support and training budget which you can use for training, fieldwork, conferences, or other forms of personal development.
• Students on this scholarship scheme will also be paired with an independent tutor beyond their supervisory team.

Who can apply
Scholarships are available for applicants who are eligible for home fees (visit the University website for more information about fee status eligibility), who have Black or mixed Black heritage[i], and who have applied for a research postgraduate degree in the Faculty of Environmental & Life sciences, starting in in the 2023/24 academic year.
