Dear colleagues

Thanks to UNESCO and the Government of Slovenia for organising the 2nd Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence: Changing the Landscape of AI Governance in Slovenia on 5-6 February 2024.

This Forum brought together the experiences and expertise of countries at different levels of technological and policy development, for a focused exchange to learn from each other, and for a dialogue with the private sector, academia and a wider civil society.

Subject: EU Countries approve landmark AI rules. Why are there still no AI Laws in the UK?

Dear colleagues

EU Countries unanimously endorse Artificial Intelligence Act on Feb. 2, 2024. The ambassadors of the 27 countries of the European Union unanimously approved the world’s first comprehensive rulebook for Artificial Intelligence, rubber-stamping the political agreement reached in December. The EU's new rules are said to be the most comprehensive on governing the use and safety of AI.

I am pleased to see forward progress on the EU AI Act. Congratulations to all EU countries for their work.

Why are there still no AI Laws in the UK?

I wrote an Open Letter on the need for UK AI Laws to protect UK citizens.

The UK government needs to bring its AI policy back in line with the values of freedom, democracy, and rule of law. The UK Government need to regulate the Big Tech to protect democracy, protect human rights and prevent corruption.

Best wishes

Suchith
