I have a PhD in Computer Science, but am now working in the Department of Geoinformatics where I run the Centre for Geoinformation Science (CGIS), see www.up.ac.za/cgis. One of the research focus groups in CGIS is the ICA-OSGeo Lab. We use FOSS4G tools for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. I encourage my students to use open source tools in their research: it’s readily available and especially nice for Computer Science students because they can contribute. We also present short courses in QGIS and PostGIS. We are looking forward to collaborating with other sin the lab. In particular, there is an initiative in ICA for the International Mapping Year in 2014. I will circulate an email to the discussion list with more information. Sergio Acosta y Lara: I'm from Sección Sistemas de Información Geográfica, Dirección Nacional de Topografía, Ministerio de Transporte y Obras Públicas (MTOP), Uruguay. I was invited to join this network because I coordinated a project to develop gvSIG Batoví, a GIS tool to be used in the OLPC initiative in my country, Uruguay, but it's also possible to be used everywhere. http://uy.linkedin.com/pub/sergio-acosta-y-lara/a/9a/564 Silvana Camboim: My e-mail is silvanacamboim@gmail.com Suchith Anand: Hi all, this is Suchith from University of Nottingham Thuy Vu: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/tuongthuy-vu/15/177/467 2) Website update (Manuel) Manuel Haro: www.conlibre.org/osgeolabs. Jeff McKenna: thanks Manuel! Phillip Davis: Should we have Manuel demo site? Haro, Manuel: It is a pleasure. Thanks to you. Jeff McKenna: Manuel: are you planning to use a CMS ? What is the tech architecture of site? Just curious... Manuel Haro: We have two developments over Wordpress and Drupal. Jeff McKenna: Manuel: ok, thanks 3) Updates on relevant training opportunities, bid opportunities (All) Luis Bermudez: Silvana and others interested, we should talk to coordinate the one day "Forum " that I (or we) will provide about OGC Standards. I would like very much to have the material in Portuguese. ArleteMeneguette: I can help with Portuguese translations, Luis! Our meeting with interested partners on ICA OSGEO Labs is scheduled to take place at MundoGEO#Connect on June, 18th. Luis Bermudez: Arlete, is this part of MundoGEO#Connect agenda? Silvana Camboim: Luis, yes, it is. We are going to do a meeting for Brazilian ICA-OSGeo Labs in Brazil during MundoGeo. I can help in translation to Portuguese too, and we can call more volunteers too. We can arrange this in MundoGeo as well. Charlie Schweik: Re education collaboration: We need to: (1) harness the ELOGeo database system; (2) Need to utilize the OSGeo journal or something to create incentives for educational content contributions; and all make a commitment to collaborate on this… Charlie Schweik: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2013/nsf13073/nsf13073.jsp Phillip Davis: SAVI award is expected to vary from $50,000 to $400,000 per year for up to five years. NSF funds will support only the U.S. participants. That's upto $2M over 5 years :) Luis Bermudez: Maybe linked to thishttp://www.nsf.gov/dir/index.jsp?org=OCI Phillip Davis: Not a word from NSF ATE on our proposal. We are now 6 months + Week Charlie Schweik: Phil, maybe tell the group about that proposal? Serena Coetzee: It's in Namibia in October. Barend Koebben applied for the funding to present the training. Phillip Davis: I'd prefer to see if its funded. :) Phillip Davis: EarthCube is a community-driven activity sponsored through a partnership between the NSF Directorate of Geosciences and Office of Cyberinfrastructure to transform the conduct of geosciences research and education. EarthCube aims to create a well-connected and facile environment to share data and knowledge in an open, transparent, and inclusive manner, thus accelerating the ability of the geosciences community to understand and predict the Earth system.Achieving EarthCube will require a long-term dialog between the NSF and the interested scientific communities to develop cyberinfrastructure that is thoughtfully and systematically built to meet the current and future requirements of geoscientists. New avenues will be supported to gather community requirements and priorities for the elements of EarthCube, and to capture the best technologies to meet the current and future needs of the broad and diverse geoscience community. The EarthCube portfolio will consist of interconnected projects and activities that engag Jeff McKenna: "cost proposal" contains what? Jeff McKenna: not sure of that Suchith Anand: COST bid Jeff McKenna: okay thanks Suchith Anand: http://www.cost.eu/ Phillip Davis: The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. This solicitation features two mechanisms for support of student research: (1) REU Sites are based on independent proposals to initiate and conduct projects that engage a number of students in research. REU Sites may be based in a single discipline or academic department or may offer interdisciplinary or multi-department research opportunities with a coherent intellectual theme. Proposals with an international dimension are welcome. (2) REU Supplements may be included as a component of proposals for new or renewal NSF grants or cooperative agreements or may be requested for ongoing NSF-funded research projects.Undergraduate student participants in either REU Sites or REU S eff McKenna: ah, ok thanks Thuy Vu: this one http://www.cost.eu/? Charlie Schweik: REU is a good idea too Charlie Schweik: Is there an international REU program? Charlie Schweik: That would be great Maria, Suchith Nataliya Tkachenko: Interesting indeed, Maria! Charlie Schweik: So maybe we leverage the writing together and submit to both NSF and COST Ela Woloszynska-Wisniewska: COST looks great! NGOs can also apply so this is perfect for us Charlie Schweik: So let's explore more dialog on what they are looking for and if there is a lot of content overlap or if they are different proposals Phillip Davis: Charlie here's International REU solicitation from NSF http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=12831 Nataliya Tkachenko: Hi Ela! Your website looks impressive Phillip Davis: The International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) program supports development of globally-engaged U.S. science and engineering students capable of performing in an international research environment at the forefront of science and engineering. The IRES program supports active research participation by students enrolled as undergraduates or graduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. IRES projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the IRES program. Jeff McKenna: maybe everyone could add their own details in the attendance section of the wiki? http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/ICA_OSGeo_Lab_Network_2013-05-02 Jeff McKenna: i will do my best though :) Luis Bermudez: Philip, Yes EarthCube can open opportunities. This is why I was pointing to the NSF OCI office. Part of building the cyberinfrastructure is building the educational components. Suchith Anand: thanks Jeff for scribing Phillip Davis: My college would be happy to be submitter for ideas from international PIs Phillip Davis: If you wish to explorer further contact me mailto:pdavis@delmar.edu Nataliya Tkachenko: Thank you Phillip Sergio Acosta y Lara: Thanks also, Phillip Phillip Davis: Can we set up a regularily scheduled meeting Suchith so FOSS4G educators can drop in? Sergio Acosta y Lara: That will be great Phillip Davis: http://www.stateofthemap.org Thuy Vu: Great idea 4) FOSS4G 2013 Nottingham Update (Suchith) Charlie Schweik: Lastly FOSS4G 2013 group meeting -- please have some way for us not there to call/skype in or something 5) ICC 2013 Dresden update (Suchith) , Date and time for next meeting (All) , AOB Charlie Schweik: I need to leave -- another meeting I'm late for. Sorry but great to talk to everyone and GREAT that this network has formed. I want to have a group dialog on how we re-start the effort to share and create new derivatives on educational materials. I think we need to incentivize this by considering creating some kind of "published" form for educational materials and maybe peer-review. OSGeo journal maybe is a possibility? We need to think about this as a group... Thuy Vu: Have a good day, Charlie. Bye Suchith Anand: thanks Thuy Sergio Acosta y Lara: Bye Charlie. Nice to hear you Jeff McKenna: someone's dog is whining :) Nataliya Tkachenko: Bye Charlie, thanks! Charlie Schweik: Thanks all -- sorry to leave. Cheers Nataliya Tkachenko: :))) yes, there's another participator Jeff McKenna: natasha: :) Jeff McKenna: +1 Thuy Vu: Ok for me ArleteMeneguette: It has been a pleasure to be together (virtually), this time is perfect Phillip Davis: +1 Marco Negretti: +1 Silvana Camboim: +1 Sergio Acosta y Lara: +1 Nataliya Tkachenko: yes, would be great - so I'll have a proper microfone next time :) Jason Sadler: thanks Suchith, great co-ordinating ArleteMeneguette: I am taking notes of our meeting
