All are encouraged to make travel plans in August 2015 which include the pre-conference joint workshop of
the Commissions on Education & Training, and Maps & the Internet. The main International Cartographic Conference will take
place in Rio de Janeiro from 23-28 August 2015. The joint workshop will be presented in a more informal environment in the
university city of Curitiba from 20-21 August 2015. In due course we will communicate information from the local organisers about accommodation and transport details. In the meantime we welcome your interest in this workshop.

This meeting will present an opportunity for cartographers from Brasil, and those from around the world to
discuss and present developments at the interface between contemporary internet technologies and current educational
practice. It will be held at the Federal University of Parana (a progressive, hi-tech, institution with an excellent
reputation for cartographic education). Commission members, professors Claudia Robbi Sluter and Maria Brandalise from the
Department of Geomatics will host this meeting in their home institution.

The meeting will overlap another joint ICA Commission meeting (Use & User Issues, and Cognitive
Visualization) in the same venue, allowing for attendance at both. Onward travel to the ICC in Rio de Janeiro will be easy.
The meeting will be free to attend, and we encourage all cartographers who have an interest in developments in
cartographic/geospatial science education, and in Internet Mapping, to contribute.

Contributions in the form of short presentations are sought on the following topics:

Teaching about the Internet in Cartographic Education:

Developing and using Animated Maps on Internet Platforms

Possibilities in Three-Dimensional Mapping using the Internet

Using the Internet to handle map data – examples such as Sensor Feeds; Data Discovery Methods; SDIs and the
Internet; Spatial Data Compilation and Map Integration using the Internet etc

Addressing the Internet Mapping flowline, from Source Gathering to Distribution

Spatially enriching Location Based Services

Maps and the Internet of Things

Using the Internet for Cartographic Education:

Cartographic MOOCs: their Role in Education in Cartography

Evolving Resources in Cartography Education: Textbooks to YouTube, and Beyond

Integration of Internet-based Social Media into Cartographic Education

Internet Globes and Geobrowsers for Education

Development of successful Higher Education Programmes in Cartography – experiences from China, Brazil, Spain,
Turkey, other nations, and joint programmes

Matching Technological Solutions in Internet Cartography with Learning Outcomes for University Students

Educational overview:

How has Cartographic Theory changed in the context of Internet Mapping?

Accreditation of web-based Cartographic Education?

Note that this list of topics of interest is identical with those promoted by the Commission on Maps and the Internet. We believe that the conjugation of the two Commissions will result in valuable advances in cartographic practice in the classroom and on the web.

The ICA has negotiated the production of a Springer volume in the series Lecture Notes on Geoinformation and Cartography to cover the presentations from this meeting. Please send your initial abstract of your presentation (~400 words) to the joint organiser of the meeting and CM&I Chair, Rex Cammack (rcammack@unomaha.edu) who will jointly edit the printed volume. You should also send a copy to the CE&T Chair, David Fairbairn (david.fairbairn@newcastle.ac.uk) so that we can together develop a good programme for the meeting. The revised deadline for submitting abstracts is 1 May 2015.
