We met with Tim Sutton of the QGIS Project in Copenhagen with Lene Fisher and others and have started a QGIS specific certification process. We educators believe the developers need to create/control the certification process and we academics will provide the educational materials to get our students ready for both industry-wide and application-specific certification.
Folks,
after lots of talks and thoughts about certification nothing much
really happened. I stopped to work on the individual certification
program which I started three years ago because of a lack of support
from the community and too many obvious potential areas of conflict.
Thanks for the great initiative and work by Phillip Davis and the QGIS
team for trying their best to find a viable option. I am sure
eventually something really good is going to come out of this.

And the topic is still hot as this news item shows, I recommend it as
a good read in preparation for our BoF in Como in July:
lizing-the-geoint-workforce.html

FYI: We have shifted our focus towards a certification program for
businesses who have indicated a need for certified Open Source
competency on an organizational level. We don't really know yet where
this will get us but it seems to be a lot more straightforward than
the individual certification we initially envisaged.

Thanks again to those who tried hard to get something off the ground
and sorry to drop the ball at this point but it has developed into a
bottomless hole of time and money which I cannot maintain on my own.

Have fun,
Arnulf
