Dear GeoForAll colleagues,

May I request your help and active participation (esp. from those colleagues who are based in Europe) in this excellent opportunity regarding a special session "FOSS4GeoEducation" at FOSS4G.be 2017 [1] planned on 26th Oct 2017. Maëlle Drubbel and Moritz Lennert
have contacted me on this but as I am already committed to presenting at GEO-XIV which will take place in Washington D.C., from 23 to 26 October 2017, I am unable to be present for FOSS4G.be 2017 but I hope there will be key colleagues from our community
who can follow up on this opportunity that Maëlle has emailed which I am forwarding to the list with permission.

If there are interested volunteers to help with this session, please share your ideas. If you are able to present GeoForAll keynote or contribute to this special session , I can send you all the slides and information. Please email Maëlle Drubbel directly
if you can help on this at mavercau@ulb.ac.be. All details below. Thanks.

Best wishes,
Dear Maelle, Moritz,

Thank you for your email and great to hear that you are organizing a special session "FOSS4GeoEducation" at FOSS4G.be 2017 . This is really timely . I want to thank you for your kind invitation but I am already committed to presenting at GEO-XIV which will
take place in Washington D.C., from 23 to 26 October 2017, so I am unable to accept this keynote speaker opportunity for this session.

I will however work to get key people from GeoForAll community to represent us for your session . Is it okay, if I may forward your mail and event info to GeoForAll lists and request ideas of how we can help you with this session and get interested volunteers
to speak at the session? Please let me know and I will follow this.

Once again many thanks for your work and efforts to promote Open principles in GeoEducation.

Best wishes,
Subject: foss4g-be - 26/10/2017 – keynote speakers ?

Dear Mr. Anand,
I am contacting you following your very active involvement in Geo4all. Indeed, this resonates strongly with our reflections of the moment at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and the OSGeo.be on which Moritz Lennert and I are strongly involved.

This year, we launched an academic interuniversity reflection on teaching on open source softwares in geomatics. So we decided to organize a special session "FOSS4GeoEducation" at FOSS4G.be 2017 [1], which will take place on Thursday October 26, 2017 in Brussels
(hereby the minutes with the actions that we intend to carry out : [2])

We are currently attempting to collect information about the experience in geomatics teaching, and the use of FOSS4G, in Belgian universities. We hope to have a representative panel of academics at the special session to discuss this.

In view of your presentation to FOSS4G-Europe we think you will be a good keynote for our plenary session to present Geo4all which will also be the opportunity to put a spotlight on the special session. Ideally, you will also be involved, but on more concrete
issues such as to promote an academic reflection on free open source software in geomatics.

The special session is intended to promote an academic reflection on free open source software in geomatics and for example answer to this following questions :

- How is free software for geomatcics (FOSS4G) competitive with proprietary solutions?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of promoting FOSS4G versus proprietary software?
- Who has access to technology and how to guarantee access for the greatest number?
- How to participate in the sharing of the production of courses on free tools in geomatics?
- What are the pedagogical innovations for geomatics courses and how to judge their effectiveness ?

The potential structure envisaged for the 2-hour session is as follows :

1) Overview of Free Software in the academic and in the research environment on what is existing in the global context in Universities (status – inventory) in a global point of view and also specifically in Belgium with data from a survey

2) Talk about Geo4all (the opportunity to be part of it and participating in its development) & OSGeo-Live (overview of FOSStools & demos)

3) Round table about experiences we had with training and teaching FOSS4G : moving to FOSS, what we have as new open data, new FOSS tools, what are the needs for education to developers, what are the resources we have (which materials already exist and how
to enhance new material using FOSS in the existing flow)

So what we wish is to have an oral communication about an introduction of Geo4all to promote Open Principles in Science and Education ideas and philosophy in the morning and also in the afternoon how concretely become a member of Geo4all, the opportunity to
be part of it and participating in its development.

We think that having you who is the main driving force behind geo4all could be great so if needed the event will covers reasonable travel expenses agreed in advance and arranges accommodation for accepted keynote speakers.

In this context, would you be interested and available to share your experience and reflexion as a keynote speaker in the morning at the main track and/or as speaker in our special session in the afternoon ?

Thank you in advance for your answer,

Kind Regards,
