 dictates the underlying data source.  For GeoServer, there are a litany of database to which it is perfectly happy to connect.  I specifically said *databases* because editing a file is really not a good idea.  There exist a few reasons for this but the most
 important is probably dealing with concurrency.  I tend to use GeoServer for WFS-T testing and implementation because it's really damn easy.  (Download, create start up script, win.)<o:p></o:p></span></p>

 and I both changed the shape of a polygon, or a label, or other attribute, at the same time, there's no good way for a file to resolve these changes.  A server might be able to do some good work to make this type of operation work but I'd highly suggest AVOIDING
 using a multi-user file-based system.  The generally accepted method is to make something similar to a PostGIS database and offer exports to Shapefiles.
