Hi,

there two types of translations in geonode:

- the geonode system translation that is the normal site translation and is
manged by transifex see docs here on how to contribute
http://docs.geonode.org/en/master/organizational/contribute/contribute_to_translation.html?highlight=transifex

- the model translation that is the translation of the content of GeoNode
like the layers titles and descriptions and so on, this translation has to
be made locally by the administrator. This requires additional fields in
the database as you say gn_description_code.. . By default GeoNode ships
one translation (named english but is a pure label) you can enable
additional model translations in your local geonode by adding the language
here https://github.com/GeoNode/geonode/blob/master/geonode/settings.py#L145.
This require a database change so the cleaner way is to back up your data,
drop the db and recreate it with geonode syncdb, then load them back.

hope this helps
