OpenBSD has its own libtool packaged in this specific way. IMHO it is
a very reasonnable thing to do since libtool is supposed to be
platform-specific. But basically, the real problem is that the
GNU/linux/libtool model for library versioning is simply not
applicable on BSD. So there is no correct solution in general,
only "vendor"-specific policy. Which is why you cannot impose
or expect soname to be this or that.
