Well, if you are in the same location, all you have to do is replace 
$MAPSET with PERMANENT.

We could do that, but I think that the v.db.* modules already respond to 
that need. the db.* modules are meant as more generic database 
management modules which allow you to deal with any tables in any databases.

The major problem with using db.* in your context is that you have to 
know the name of the table. You suppose that it is equal to the name of 
the map, but this is not always the case...
