I just tried this at work and the menu items are working correctly  
(finally had sufficient coffee?).

Anyway, "color tables" launches v.colors which allows you to do a  
color gradient from max to min, using any of the known raster color  
tables; "color rules" allows you to manually specify colors for  
specific vector attribute values or value ranges.
