 oh, something else I just remembered-- does the grid file actually exist
 on the hard drive?

 ISTR that part of the big osgeo4w patch last month included a line where,
 for reasons unknown to me, it commented out the line where the grid files
 got installed.

 could you check if they are still in `c:/Program Files/GRASS
 6.*/etc/nad/`?
