Most Mac users are running from the GUI and will not be trying to set an environmental variable from the terminal before running a command from the terminal. We need to be thinking like most Mac users.

Don't add anything into any .profile or .bash_profile. Do it as Moritz suggests, use export right before you run the commands. (You can of course put these things in some file and then use `source` command.)<br class="">
