The most recent release of spgrass6 introduced a change in this - the underlying r.in.bin and r.out.bin use 0 as NA, and now the value can be set or -9999 used as default. If updating doesn't solve the problem, please let me know.
Subject: [STATSGRASS] spgrass6 - conversions "zeros" to N/A?

Hi

When I transferr map from grass to R with some values = 0 these valuses
are converted to N/A. I can ommit this converting zeros to small number
for example 0.0000001, but it is not an solution - for example with
curvature

regards
Jarek
