xgdisplay

Follow up question on color usage in xgdisplay:

I've minimized color assignments in my .Xdefaults file, and can start up
xgdisplay without problem when GRASS is the only thing running, but
I can only display rasters with a limited number of colors.
If I choose a map with a wide range of colors, the xgdisplay window just
goes away, and I get an error message that no colors are available.

Is there an easy way to find out how many colors xgdisplay needs, and
how many are available?

A previous post suggested using xcmap to find out what colors are available,
but I don't have xcmap on my system. :-(
Can I optimize my chances at all with xstdcmap ?

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.
