There have been numerous inquiries lately about where to get GRASS for
the Macintosh computer system. Central Washington University GIS Lab
ported GRASS 4.0 for the Mac and has distributed many copies on CD and by
other methods. The port of GRASS 4.1 was just recently completed and
the CD-ROM's are now being cut. Distribution should begin about October 1.

This port includes MAPGEN, LTPlus, the "pbmplus" portable pixmap utilities,
and RIM from the GRASS 4.1 "related" software, in addition to all the src
and src.alpha code. Many, but not all, src.contrib programs are included
and functioning. From the src.garden code the s.db.rim and v.db.rim programs
(which interface GRASS to RIM) are operational in their command-line versions
(the menu versions are not functional due to conflicts in the Apple FORTRAN
compiler with other libraries). Of course, the complete set of GRASS4.1
sources and test data bases are included. The distribution includes a
complete set of binaries so that no compilation is necessary.

The system requirements are: 4 MB RAM (8 MB highly recommended), a Mac II ci
or higher system, a CD-ROM, Apple Unix (A/UX) version 3.0 or higher, and
about 150 MB of disk for A/UX, 75 MB of disk for GRASS 4.1 src, objects and
binaries, and another 75 MB of disk for the test data sets (spearfish, global
and imagery). Mac Quadra machines work fine, too.

Included with the CD-ROM are a copy of the GRASS User's Reference Manual,
installation instructions, instructions for running X-windows under the Finder
or in native (much faster) mode, and telephone support for getting up and
running (needed so far by about 25% of the users).
