temp files

I maybe a bit behind the time here, but I've just noticed that GRASS
creates a .tmp directory under each mapset.  When I exit, the contents 
of .tmp are not deleted leaving behind some very large files!

Does anyone know if this is a design fault or am I doing something wrong?
