v.in.arc

Hi.

I am using Grass 4.1.  
I am trying to import an ARC/INFO vector file into GRASS
and then create a raster file.  

I am able to bring the ARC/INFO file into GRASS with v.in.arc.
However, every time I try to use v.support to build the topology
information (so that i can use v.to.rast), i get the following
error:

sh: 5132 Memory fault
ERROR(v.support): Could not build vector file: 'filename'

(the number 5132 changes each time)

The same thing happens when I use v.support on any files,
even vector files made in GRASS from GRASS rasters.  

Is this a common probelm ? How do I fix it ?
