How do I get rid of those white monitors?

Greetings!

I have just installed GRASS4.1 binaries on a Linux system and
encountered some problems with colors and monitors while doing some
exercises with spearfish:

1) I strarted a monitor and used d.display, which seems to work fine,
but when I put my cursor on the monitor, the rest of the screen turns
red and orange. It DOES wake you up, but I prefer coffee. How do I
change this? Color related man pages did not give me a clue.

2) Furthermore, I started 3 monitors and first I reduced their size. The
monitors turned from black to white. I tried to display elevation.dem
with d.rast map=elevation.dem on the white monitors and nothing happens.
If I don't reduce a monitr first, and immediately display elevation.dem,
a white field appears on the black background, where elevation.dem is
supposed to show up. Strange thing is that I used to be able to display
elevation.dem. What did I do so that I can not display it anymore or
what are sources of my problem, and how do I solve the problem?

I appreciate your help for getting me on the GRASS roads, after these
first hours of muddling around.

Luc.
!!!!!!!!!!
PS: I HAD TWO SEND THIS MESSAGE TWICE. IN THE MEANTIME I FOUND OUT THAT MY
SECOND PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE SOLVED IF I RUN FROM THE C SHELL, NOT FROM BASH.
IS THIS CORRECT AND HOW DO I RUN FROM BASH?
