GRASS error under Linux

I installed GRASS4.1 from the Linux binaries (linuxg.a*) using the
install.sh script. Everything seemed to work ok but when I run grass I get
the error

/usr/local/grass/etc/gis_set: can resolve symbol '__waddbytes'

Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

I am running RHCL 4.0. (kernel 2.0.18)

In addition I was wondering if someone could provide me with the changes
required to compile GRASS under linux. I have tried running the setup
script to create the head file and I keep getting errors.
