Importing DTED files

Grass Users:

        I have acquired a Level 1 DTED from Geomatics Canada on CD-ROM.  I
am uncertain how to coax this file into a GRASS raster map format and am a
little unclear as to the format of the DTED itself.  Is DTED data an ascii
raster matrix or a huge site list with elevations?  I have been hunting
around on the web but am unable to find much technical information.  Any
help would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.
