<bg> is not a valid parameter

The GRASS Version 4.1 User's Reference Manual (hardcopy, Spring 1993 does 
not list "bg" as a parameter for d.rast (in fact, _none_ of the "d." 
commands list bg as a parameter in that manual). What are you guys 
testing this on??
