what gives 'ls -l grass4.2' in /usr/local/grass42/ or /usr/local/bin
resp.?

it should be something like

-rwxr-xr-x    1 grass    staff        106 Aug  3 13:40 grass4.2*

Did you try something like './grass4.2' in the named directories? (Incl.
the dot and the slash).

Just tell us, what you get :-)
