does m.dem.extract work in 4.2 and 4.1?

Hi I was going to write a m.dem.sdts.extract so I tried m.dem.extract but i failed for me under suse 5.3 for both the 4.2 and 4.1 verisons (It also failed on windows 98 visual c++ 6.0). I am trying the 4.2.19 linux binaries and a compile of 4.0 now. Has anyone got m.dem.extract to work on Linux? The code does strange things with \n\r and nextrecord and suse (or me may do strange things also)
