GRASS 4.2.1 On Linux (COL 1.3) lock file problem

Suggestions on how to correct this situation?  I have followed
instructions in Marcus's FAQ to set up the locks directory, and his new
install instructions.   I have no .gislock file in my home directory,
but it is writeable.

"/usr/local/grass42/etc/GIS.sh:  /usr/local/grass42/etc/lock:  No such
file or directory
Unable to properly access /home/cdingman/.gislock
Please notify system personel."
