grass: gtopo30 extraction

Howdy.

I'm wondering whether any readers have read a downloadable DEM file,
e.g. e060n40.tar.gz, into grass 5 on a linux machine.  The byte order
needs to be reversed, or at least the docs indicate this.  If this is
done will m.dem.extract then work?  Does the header need to be 
reincorporated somehow after untarring the distributed tile file?

Finally, has someone already written a program to do this for the 
gtopo30 data?
