Hi there,

if you like to try, get the nviz2.2 precompiled on
Linux/Intel here:

http://www.geog.uni-hannover.de/grass/grass421/linux/
nviz_linuxbin.tar.gz (290k)

Extract the package in

/usr/local/grass42

NVIZ will be started within GRASS by
   nviz2.2

Note: When opening a new map, the map names are
not displayed. This is fixed for the next GRASS 5beta4
release. Take the NVIZ2.2 for GRASS 4.2.1 as a preview,
we will not spend time on that. Further development
will be done in GRASS 5 environment.

You need tcl8.0.x/tk8.0.x and libraries to run NVIZ. Additionally
the openGL clone "MESA" is required.
Tcl/tk8.0: http://www.scriptics.com/products/tcltk/8.0.html
Mesa 3.0: http://www.mesa3d.org/
           http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/graphics/libs/Mesa/

Best regards
