SENIOR ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST
Spatial Analyst/Landscape Modeler
Everglades Department, SFWMD, West Palm Beach, FL

The Everglades Department (ED) is reopening our announcement of a
tenured position for a senior ecologist to join the Everglades Landscape
Modeling program. Research in the ED ranges from wetlands and tree
islands of the northern Everglades to the mangrove and seagrass
communities in the southern Everglades and Florida Bay. This basic
research is linked directly to our simulation modeling program in
helping to evaluate and optimize a $7.8 billion Everglades restoration
program. In expanding its modeling team, the ED seeks a new member who
is interested in the analysis of spatio-temporal dynamics and the
development of computing applications. Primary duties include: develop
methods to enhance spatial and temporal understanding of Everglades
system dynamics; coordinate landscape model integration with databases,
GIS, and the WWW; integrate existing landscape simulation models with
new, or other existing, hydrologic and ecological models. The incumbent
can have the opportunity to develop field research activities that are
related to one of the many components of the landscape models. The
candidate should have a strong background in concepts of ecology,
hydrology, and/or computer science. We seek a person with skills in
geostatistical techniques and GIS, preferably with simulation modeling
experience and expertise in a high level programming language (C, C++,
java). Understanding of Unix, scripting applications, web development,
dynamic models, and high level programming languages is helpful.

Spatial analysis/GIS: Because our focus for this position is on various
forms of spatial analysis, we would alternatively consider specialists
who emphasize GIS and geostatistics, bringing advanced techniques for
analysis of spatial relationships among multiple variables.

Minimum requirements are a Master's degree in a science or engineering
field with 4 years experience; Ph.D. preferred. The salary range is
$46,072 - $71,344. More information on our research in landscape
modeling may be found at http://www.sfwmd.gov/org/erd/esr/elm.html .

Application deadline: 11/22/00. Candidates should submit a letter of
research interests, vita, and names and contact information for 3
references. Include the Job Reference Number 000318 in your application.
