Did you compile GRASS yourself?

If so, error.log should say that XDRIVER wasn't compiled successfully. 
It won't say why; you have to examine the output from "make" for the
error message.

If you obtained pre-compiled binaries, please inform whoever created
them that the package was incomplete.
