[GRASSLIST:2393] r.in.gdal problem

I am attempting to import DEM files to a new location.  The files have been 
converted from SDTS format to binary DEMs using SDTS2DEM.  I am trying to 
bring these into Grass using r.in.gdal, but I am receeiving an error message 
announcing that r.in.gdal is unable to initialize the GDAL bridge and to 
check the installation of libdgal.  I am running GRASS 5.0.0pre1.  I have 
compiled on my system under SuSE linux 7.2.  Aside from the fact that NVIZ 
will not compile, I received no errors during the compile.  My system is a 
PII 350 mHz system with 20 GB of hd space for Linux and 385 mb of ram.

Can someone offer a clue? (Is r.in.gdal the correct module for instance).
